What is market replay, and how to practice with it
A real trading day, played back so you can trade it again. Here is why it is the fastest way to get screen time, and how to use it without fooling yourself.
Market replay means playing back a past trading day, bar by bar, so you can trade it as though it were happening live. You do not know what comes next, you place orders as prices print, and you see how your decisions would have played out.
Why traders use it
- Any hour. The live market is only moving the way you want for a few hours a day. A replay runs whenever you do.
- More reps, faster. You can speed through the quiet middle of a day and slow down for the part that matters.
- The days that matter. You can practice a big news day, like an inflation report or a sudden selloff, without waiting months for the next one.
Real days vs generated data
Generated price data is fine for learning which buttons do what, but it does not behave like a market. Real days carry the patterns traders actually trade: the rush at the open, the quiet lunch hour, the fake breakout before the real move, the reaction to news at 8:30 or 10:00 Eastern time.
If the goal is to build instincts you will use later, practice on data that actually happened. Tapely labels every session as real tape or practice tape, so you always know which one you are on.
How to practice without fooling yourself
Replay has one big weakness: hindsight. If you already remember what happened that day, you are not practicing, you are remembering. A few ways around it:
- Do not look at the day first. Pick the date, then start trading without scrolling ahead.
- Hide the date if you can. Famous days are easy to recognize.
- Use real account rules. A loss limit and a trailing drawdown make you trade like the money is real. See trailing drawdown explained.
- Play at normal speed for the part you trade. Speeding up is fine for the dead hours. At your entry, you need to feel real time.
- Review every session. Write down the trades, the rule you broke, and what you will try next time.
A simple weekly routine
- Three normal days to practice your main setup.
- One news day to practice sitting out the first minutes or trading the reaction.
- One day that went against you live, replayed until you can trade it within your rules.
Replay on Tapely
Tapely is built around this. With the Pass, pick any weekday since 2015 on NQ, ES or EURUSD, and it prints candle by candle with evaluation-style rules running. Days not yet in the library are built from tick data the first time you open them. Prices come from index data that tracks the futures, so individual prints can differ slightly from the exchange. Each session is a single trading day.
The free plan includes 3 sessions a month and one real day: DeepSeek Monday (27 January 2025), when tech gapped down more than 3% before the open and never got it back.
